Korea Open Tomova Books Spot In Second Round

Korea Open: Tomova books spot in second round

Bulgarian beats Aussie wildcard Maddison Inglis in straight sets

Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova has booked her spot in the second round of the Korea Open with a straight-sets win over Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis on Tuesday.

Tomova, ranked 109th in the world, needed just 65 minutes to dispatch Inglis 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the WTA 125 tournament. The Bulgarian broke Inglis's serve five times in the match and saved all three break points she faced.

Tomova will face either top seed Magda Linette of Poland or Japan's Moyuka Uchijima in the second round. Linette is the highest-ranked player in the tournament at No. 51 in the world.

Inglis, who was playing in her first WTA tournament since March, was the only Australian in the Korea Open main draw. The 24-year-old has been struggling with a foot injury for much of the season, but she showed signs of improvement in her performance on Tuesday.

In other first-round matches, Nao Hibino of Japan defeated Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-2, and Tatjana Maria of Germany beat Arianne Hartono of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-3.

The Korea Open is a WTA 125 tournament, which means it is one level below the WTA Tour. The tournament is being held in Seoul this week and offers a total prize pool of $115,000.
