Giants Agree to Six-Year, $151-Million Extension With Matt Chapman

Six-Time Gold Glove Winner at Third Base

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a six-year, $151-million contract extension with third baseman Matt Chapman, the team announced Monday.

Chapman, 29, is a six-time Gold Glove winner and two-time Platinum Glove winner. He has been one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball since breaking into the league with the Oakland Athletics in 2017.

In 2022, Chapman hit .277 with 27 home runs and 75 RBI in 155 games.

Contract Details

  • Six years, $151 million
  • Average annual value: $25.17 million
  • Full no-trade clause
  • Opt-out clause after the 2026 season

The extension is the largest contract the Giants have ever given to a player.

Reaction

Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said in a statement that Chapman is "a cornerstone of our franchise."

"Matt is one of the best third basemen in baseball, and we are thrilled to have him in San Francisco for the next six years," Zaidi said.

Chapman said he is "excited" to stay with the Giants.

"I love playing in San Francisco, and I believe in what we're building here," Chapman said. "I'm committed to helping this team win a World Series."

Analysis

The Chapman extension is a big win for the Giants. He is a key piece of their young core, and he is one of the best defensive players in the league.

The contract is a bit pricey, but it is worth it for a player of Chapman's caliber. He is a perennial All-Star and Gold Glove winner, and he is still only 29 years old.

With Chapman locked up for the next six years, the Giants can now focus on building a contending team around him.
